Week of May 16th, 2016 | Rathtars, X-Wings + ALL The Star Wars Tees! Oh My!

I realize it's been more than a few weeks since my last post. Ok, it's been almost two months! I know you're all asking, "What has she been doing this whole time?" I'm gonna be honest, there was a lot of Netflix, new movies and a few new T-shirt designs. Along with lots of fine tuning of the website to make it a little bit harder for people to steal my artwork.

The reality is sometimes my days are filled with sending DMCA Takedown notices to a bunch scummy people who think it's ok to take what I've worked on and try to a turn a profit for themselves, while I lose sales and money.  Believe it or not this is a very common occurrence across the board with Tee Designers. The positive side is we're all looking out for each other and let others know when we see a stolen design. The whole process of this is very time consuming, from spending almost an entire day checking typical sites that tend to steal to a few weeks battling with a company over a takedown notice. It tends to take away the real enjoyment of what we do.

I try not to get too stressed by it all and at the end of the day, I still love designing these tees!

In case you missed my latest T-shirt design a few weeks ago, I'll give you a little recap.

I was really inspired by the scene in The Force Awakens, of the Rathtars that Han Solo was smuggling on his ship.  The conversation between Han, the Guavian Death Gang and Kanjiklub was what got me thinking what if King Prana was sick of Han Solo's excuses. So he decided to put together a crew of reckless riders to wrangler the rare Rathtars for his exotic zoo, instead. Then a T-shirt was born. "Rathtar Wranglers" is now available on my Teepublic shop. If you're looking for items other than a T-shirt this design is also available on my Redbubble shop.

This week I worked on a new design inspired by Rouge One: A Star Wars Story. If you haven't seen the trailer yet, here you go.

I've watched this about 10 times, maybe and goosebumps every time. I knew I wanted to design something for this right from the start and this idea finally came together this week. "A Rebellion" is now available on my Teepublic shop in a variety of styles and colors. If you check it out before the weekend's over you can get a great deal, since my shop is having a sweet sale.

Since we're talking about Star Wars and amazing sales, I want to mention there are ton of awesome Star Wars tees available right now on Teepublic. Not just my designs but a lot of others by some amazingly talented people. You should definitely check them out here.  Designs by Blair J. Campbell, Dylanwho Designs, and Pigboom Art just to name a few. So much talent in this collection and the great thing is their shops are all on sale this weekend too! So go check them out, give them a like on Facebook and enjoy some Star Wars art!

Make sure to check back next week with another "In the Studio" post. I'll be bragging about a recent award I just got nominated for and answering some pretty personal questions for an interview. Stay tuned and as always, May the Force Be With You!

Week of February 15th, 2016 | The Psycho + What's Your Favorite Kind of Crazy?

Hi, Puddin’! It’s Friday and if that doesn’t put a smile on your face, then maybe the new T-shirt release this week will.  Last week I previewed some sketches I had been working on for this new design. Were you able to guess who those weapon’s belonged too?  Here’s a refresher below:

Progress pieces like the one above can really show how these designs get made. I know more than a few artists that still sketch the old school way, like you see here, with paper and pencil. I also know a lot of artists who fully embrace new technology and create their artwork digitally with a fancy tablet like the Wacom Cintiq Creative Pen Display.  These tablets are fantastic as it’s basically a direct digital drawing pad.  I definitely hope to upgrade to one of these, but for now I still love the feeling of pencil to paper. The process is a little slower that the direct digital tablets, considering I sketch on paper, scan in my sketches, the re-draw them digitally in programs such as Adobe Illustrator. However, it still gets the job done and I’m still having fun.

You can see below a little video of how the process of redrawing the sketch works in Adobe Illustrator. This is a sped up process being shown, so trust there’s a lot more time involved to achieving the above final colored version.

Right about now, you’re probably saying “That’s great Jessica, I have no idea what you’re talking about…technology?…words?…can you please just show us this new awesome shirt?”  Yes, you impossible and impatient fans.  This new T-Shirt release is a jump into the dark side of my Female Heroine Series and Choose Your Adventure design.  You can’t have a hero without a villain, right? So why leave them out. Especially when there’s so many great ones to choose from. And I really wanted to do a Harley Quinn shirt for a while, now. Here’s the new design. 'The Psycho'. It’s now available on my Teepublic shop for $14 all weekend. So make sure you take advantage of this deal before it goes full price.  There’s tons of styles to choose from, Tees, Tanks, Prints and now Phone Cases…iPhone 6 and Samsung 6 cases too!

With so many great female villains to choose from for inspiration, I want to hear from you guys who YOU would like to see more artwork for? What’s your kind of crazy? I encourage you all to leave your responses below or comment on my Facebook page along with this post. I think it’s time we take our relationship to the next level and start some social interacting. I appreciate you all for sticking with me this long.

Week of February 8th, 2016 | A Scavenger, A Princess, A Wizard... + Squad Goals

And we’re the five best friends that anyone could have, oh the five best friends…ok, I’ll stop singing and get on with it.

This week was all about being inspired by my last T-Shirt release, ‘Choose Your Adventure’  It was a combination of some of my favorite female leads in films past, present and future.  It has all the empowerment for little girls and adult girls everywhere, with all the geekiness they need in their life. It’s available now for your little ones, you must get them started early with this really cute onesie on my Redbubble shop. And while you’re watching your wee one dreaming of which female hero she can be when she grows up, start drinking a lot of coffee in the this mug, because she’s not gonna be napping long.

Now all that inspiration lead to five new designs this week. FIVE! Granted most of the artwork was all ready made last week, so that made this daring fete possible.  Most likely I won’t be releasing five new design in one week again…maybe…we’ll see.  Realizing there are so many fandoms out there and these are some of my top fav, I notice they aren’t everyone’s. So what happens when you have chosen your ultimate hero/female badass. Well you buy one of the individual shirts of course.

Here’s all five individual shirts available now on my Teepublic shop in a variety of styles and colors. You can get them all weekend long for only $14. It’s a great deal…I know. So which one will you choose?  You can go directly to them by clicking on your favorite below!

Could you imagine if your squad consisted of the five women above…unstoppable, that’s all I have to say.

Speaking of Squad.  I started on some sketching for my next round of designs.  Can you guess who these weapons belong to? And who else is excited about Suicide Squad? I know there’s a lot of mixed feelings, but I’m going with it. I’m a little excited about it, maybe a lot.

That’s it for this week! I hope everyone has a super amazing weekend! Make sure to follow me on Instagram to see all the sketch progress I’ll making next week on new designs. Until then…MTFBWY!

Week of February 1st, 2016 | All The Fangirls + Choose Your Adventure

I’m a few days late on the post. My recaps of what I’m working on in the Studio are usually posted on Fridays, but I’ve got something stellar for you guys and it just needed some extra time.

Last week was filled with some freelance work and my own new T-shirt design. It was a busy week, but I got through it all and I’m able to release a new design today for you all.

I know recently I’ve been talking a lot about all the new exciting movies coming out in this year and I kept racking my brain on how I could encompass all of my favorites into one very cool design.  After a few weeks of sketching and tweaking designs I finally came up with this one. Not only does it have all my favorite past, present and future fandoms, but the theme is really every fangirl’s daydream.

Leia's Blaster and  Hermione's Wand Sketch

Leia's Blaster and  Hermione's Wand Sketch

Battling against the First Order, fighting for gender equality, saving Han Solo from carbonatedefeating dark magic or busting’ some creepy ghosts…every girl has imagined themselves as the hero of those stories at some point. And this new design has all of these, now you can "Choose Your Adventure".

Choose Your Adventure Baseball Tee and T-Shirt available on Teepublic

Choose Your Adventure Baseball Tee and T-Shirt available on Teepublic

This design is available on my Teepublic shop for the next 3 days for only $14. So make sure to check out all the different styles and colors available as well as prints and phone cases.

This new shirt has all the empowerment for little girls and adult girls everywhere. It’s so inspiring seeing young girls cosplay as the new female cast of Ghostbuster, at conventions now.  The feedback from parents who have taken their kids to see The Force Awakens and seeing their girl’s faces light up at watching Rey on screen. I can only hope this female empowerment continues with great woman with lead roles in the geek world and beyond.

I hope you like the new design, there’s another design coming this week that should pair nicely with this. So stay tuned, and as always…MTFBWY!

Week of January 25th, 2016 | Star Wars: TFA Research + A Year of Art

A lot of my focus this week was arranging my workspace, telling people about the amazing sale TeePublic is having this week...only a few hours left people (here), and setting up some freelance work for the year. One major change I was working on was updating my workspace.  I’m one of those creatives who needs fresh new surroundings to keep me going and inspired. So before my last trip I started making some small adjustments to my inspiration station. Here's some before and after pics.

Not a huge difference, but for me it’s a major adjustment. I can be very affected by my surroundings, and with a new year comes a fresh new creative space to keep my designs and art going.

If you can’t already tell, I dabble in a lot of different creative styles. Some of my freelance work consists of logo design, pattern, illustration and some technical work with the design programs. I get projects in that will last me a week, and sometimes will go a full year. I’ve maintained some great client relationships over the years and definitely have my favorite go-to people I love working with.

Then I have my passion pieces, which are my Tee designs and paintings.  I call them passion pieces because I feel really guilty calling it work.  A conversation I had earlier today consisted of me stating “I read some origin stories this week, about...” Yeah, that’s work for me. It’s called research. But, I’m having way too much fun with it, so therefore I feel a little guilty. Speaking of research, I just got this in today.  I know…more work. This is the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary.

Take a peek at some of the fun...I mean documentation...in here.

Now I’m starting to focus on the aftermath of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. There’s still a ton of hype, but there’s also a lot of great new movies coming out this year and I feel like my brain is going to explode with all these different fandoms.

Here’s what’s  on the horizon:

Batman vs. Superman…I don’t want to talk about the Lex Luther casting…or other horrible things.

Star Wars: Rogue One…322 days away.

X-Men: Apocalypse, which looks super bad ass.

Suicide Squad which, I’m really excited about.

and Ghostbusters, yay! girls rule the paranormal world.

These are the ones I’m pretty excited about, a few more than others. So what fandoms do I focus on? I mean Star Wars: Rogue One is a sure bet, but Suicide Squad…really have some great ideas hanging out in this brain of mine. I’m thinking I’ll venture out a little this year and you’ll see some new stuff outside of the Star Wars world, but it doesn't mean completely. I'll never be done with Star Wars, never!

Another area I’ll be focusing on a lot more this year are my paintings. I talked a little bit about them last year and the group show I was apart of for my piece “Saturday Afternoon”.  I have three or four more paintings occupying the studio space that need to get finished, so you’ll be seeing a lot more of that creative side come out in 2016 as well.

As far as next week's work goes, I'll be doing a little freelance and coming out with a new Tee design that the fangirls are going to love.  Keep following to see what's coming out next week don't forget to check out my TeePublic sale while it lasts annnnddd  as always, MTFBWY.

Week of January 18th, 2016 | Collection Completed + A Little Recap

This week I'm spending some time away from the studio. Everyone needs a little break now and then. Another recharge after the holidays. But I didn't want to leave this week without a post. So I brought along the laptop and I'm writing you from my hotel room right now.

I've been wanting to do a recap for awhile, on my Star Wars Silhouette series from last year.  I just ended the collection the first week of this year, with "Wookiee Talk".  It's a pretty great collection and everyone seems to be loving these designs as much as I do. In fact last year the fantastic people over at Indieminded decided to do a little "Artist Spotlight" on me and these designs.

There's a variety of products to choose from in these designs below. Tees, stickers and phone cases are a just a few.

All these designs are available now on my Teepublic shop and Redbubble shop.

All these designs are available now on my Teepublic shop and Redbubble shop.

Also new to my Redbubble shop is last week's design, "I Like That Wookiee".  You can now get more than just shirts. This design is also available as stickers, phone cases, tote bags and pencil pouches like these below.

As much as I hate to make this such a short post, I gotta go get some play time in before the weekend is over. I know you all understand.  Most importantly I just wanted to recap these great designs from last year and the new ones this year. The Silhouette Collection is now complete and I'll be moving on to nerdier things.  With all the great geek movies coming out this year, there's going to be a big variety in my shops focusing on my favorites of course. So keep following along and...MTFBWY.

Week of January 11th, 2016 | I Like That Wookiee + Inspiration Station

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you’ve seen a few progress posts already about what I’ve been up to this week. A little sketching and a little new year clean up.

I feel like most of you, that the new year is like a reset button. It’s my Spring Cleaning, but it’s cold outside.  One major thing I wanted to accomplish in the big cleaning of 2016, was a revamp of my studio space. Here’s a before pic:

Jlane Design Paint Studio Before Photo

I know it’s not terrible, but with creatives we tend to be inspired by our surroundings. So even though this got me through a great year, I need to keep it fresh for the new one. It’s been going well, and I hope to post some after pics next week. Stay tuned!

Now let’s get to the new shirt release this week.  Of course it’s another Star Wars: The Force Awakens tee. This time a new character inspired me, a tiny new character. Maz Kanata. Maz is awesome!  She’s down to hang out with a bunch of smugglers, because she is one, and she’s crushing real hard on everyone’s favorite Wookiee. She’s not shy about it either. She’s pretty good at expressing how she feels, but not all people are. It’s cool, though. She has these goggles that help her see what you’re feeling. No playing games with this alien’s heart. #RelationshipGoals

I Like That Wookiee’ is now available on Teepublic for $14, but only for the next 72 hrs, so make sure you get yours before the weekend ends.  There’s a variety of colors and styles to choose from as well as phone cases and prints.

Before we call it a week, and start our amazing weekend, I wanted to give an update on last week’s design release. Wookiee Talk is now available on my Redbubble shop! Tons of items to pick from with this design, stickers and onesies are just a few to name. Go check it out this weekend. As always…May The Force Be With You.

Week of January 4th, 2016 | More Rey, Please! + Let's Talk Wookiee

Happy New Year!! I'm so happy to be back in the Studio after a nice two week break. I hope you all had a fantastic holiday and New Year! I spent majority of it seeing The Force Awakens, reading about the Force Awakens, talking and dreaming about The Force Awakens.  Oh and I went to the Colorado Mountains for a week, for some fun in the snow. When I say fun in the snow, I mean reinacting Kylo Ren and Rey's amazing lightsaber fight...from The Force Awakens.

Now I’m back in the studio this week with a brand new design to start off 2016.  It’s another continuation of my silhouette series, this time with a character I’ve really wanted to do something with for a while, but the hair work always seemed so treacherous. But after seeing the movie…a few times, I was inspired to add Chewbacca to my series.  Since the series is based around quotes relating to the character’s personality, I did a little digging on Chewbacca and Wookiee talk, also known as Shyriiwook. After a few hours of completely geeking out, I found there is not a full definitive language guide, the few phrases there were wouldn’t make sense and Chewbacca was inspired by George Lucas’ dog. True Story. Here’s his quote:

"I had an Alaskan Malamute when I was writing the film. A very sweet dog, she would always sit next to me when I was writing. And when I'd drive around, she'd sit in the front seat. A Malamute is a very large dog—like a hundred and thirty pounds and bigger than a human being and very long-haired. Having her with me all the time inspired me to give Han Solo a sidekick who was like a big, furry dog. Not quite like a dog, but intelligent."

―George Lucas[src]

How cool is that. So after all that, I had to come up with something. Final decision, well...I went with what we all know best. My new design for the silhouette series, "Wookiee Talk".  It might be making it’s way into my top 5 favs.  This design is available now on my Teepublic shop for $14, but only for the next 72 hrs.

A few other things I made happen this week, was making my last design of 2015, “Don’t Hold My Hand” available on stickers, onesies and journals. Because apparently there is a huge lack of Rey in Star Wars Merch world. I'll discuss more on this sore subject next week in my Blog. In the meantime these items and more are for sale now on my Redbubble shop.

Maz Kanata Star wars Sketch drawing Jlane Design

I also began working on another design that was inspired by The Force Awakens, that will be released next week.  Here’s a progress sketch and maybe you can guess what it will be.  Maz Kanata and I have something in common, we both like that Wookiee.

I’ll end this week with a BIG THANKS for being fans all of 2015 and I hope that you all continue with me on my adventure through out 2016. Until next week, May The Force Be With You!

Week of December 14th, 2015 | I Don't Need You to Hold My Hand + What's Next?

Disclaimer up front: NO SPOILERS IN THIS!  I don’t like spoilers and I don’t like people who post them. In fact I don’t even like if someone tells me they thought is was amazing or awful or whatever emotion they felt when they saw it, because I don’t want to be influenced in any way by other people and their own personal perception.  I want the experience to be mine, I don’t want to sit there during a movie and ask myself, “Well why didn’t they like it?" or “Why do they like it?” , or “When is the twist going to happen that Carol mentioned…is it this scene?…maybe this scene?…wait, what happened to the twist?"…Ugh. I hate it. Don’t say anything, don’t even give me your fan theory.  Having something especially so close to me, I just don’t want it to be clouded by anyone else’s noise.

Ok, now that I’ve got that out into the world. Let’s talk about what I worked on this week. I’m surprised I got much done considering my excitement was overwhelming at times to the point I think I was just literally walking around in circles counting down the time.  However, I managed to be able to touch on a few things I’ve been thinking about doing and things that just absolutely needed to get done.

Every year I do handmade holiday cards.  It’s my favorite part of the holidays, because I feel it’s so personal in the midst of all the generic, commercialism of the season. Don’t get me wrong, I love the holidays. Bring on commercialism. My favorite one so far. I’m totally ok with generic cards too, some of them are really funny and as long as they have a personal message in them, I’m good. I even love the photo cards too!! It’s nice to see all my family and friends faces displayed around the house.  Here’s a quick video of me working on this years cards.  You can also take a look back on my Instagram account and see what I came up with last year.

This week of course was filled with all Star Wars: TFA action and what made it even more special is that super amazing people over at Indieminded.com did a short little ‘Artist Spotlight’ article on me and all I do, from my patterns to my paintings.  They very specifically gave a great shoutout to my Star Wars Quotes/Silhouette Series. It was great, they’re great and if you’re not following them, or don’t know about them…you need to…now. They feature amazing artists, T-Shirt Designers and musicians all the time on their website, twitter, and Facebook.  I really enjoy seeing everyone’s work presented so positively. So JUST DO IT! give them a like and a follow.

And because of all the love these guys showed on my series, it inspired me, for my last T-shirt of the year, to add another Character in the mix and this time, someone new. Rey from The Force Awakens. With a simple quote, I feel applies to not only women, but children too. I think too often we feel the need to hold someone’s hand and don’t realize that it’s entirely ok to let someone feel strong, and do without the hand holding. This new T-shirt ‘Don’t Hold My Hand’ is available on Teepublic now, $14 for the next three days so if you’re doing some last minute online shopping this weekend, at least check it out. Don’t forget there’s now Phone cases for sale, as well.

Well, it’s been an amazing year and an even more fantastic end to it. With the TFA out now for the public, and all the aftermath of it, people keep asking…”What’s next?” What do you mean what’s next? Haven’t you seen all the trailers for all the wonderful fandom’s for 2016? And you can’t forget..Ghostbusters is still in my top ten of passionate geekiness and you can totally bet on seeing some stellar tees coming out next year for it. Who doesn’t love a reboot?  2016 is going to be full of such exciting new things on Jlane Design and it’s all for you guys, girls, nerds, geeks, and everyone in between.

So I leave you all to enjoy every minute of your holiday, please go see Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Have an incredible New Year! …And as usual, MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU, ALWAYS!

Can’t wait to come back here in 2016!!

Week of November 30th, 2015 | Hello from the Other Side + A Jedi's Trust

Hello. It's me. I'm in California dreaming, this cold would go away.  But alas, I'm writing this from the other side...of the bed.  It's that time of season for Thanksgiving, gift giving and germ giving, and I got bad part of those three. Yay!

Speaking of Thanksgiving, I hope you all had a delicious one. I also hope you had a chance to check out my Blog post from last week as well. I received a lot of goodies from Nerd Block last month and I released a new feature on my website, you can read all about it here.

Now this week I’ve been under the weather and between late night cough attacks and taking ALL the medicine I could possibly get my germ ridden hands on, it was a little difficult to get to a lot work I wanted to get done.  However, I was able to knock out this new piece that’s been on my mind.  I had this idea when I started my silhouette series with “Don’t Rescue Me”. So I’m excited that I had the chance to get this new design out there. “Jedi’s Trust” is inspired by the classic Star Wars character Yoda.  A Master in the ways of The Force, he is. And trusting in your feelings, is trusting in yourself. So listen to the wise Jedi Master, Yoda. Do it, you must. Feelings you must trust. (said in your best Yoda voice)

Along with this new design, I also spent the week working on some new drawing and sketching techniques. So a lot classes and tutorials to help sharpen my skills and learn new things. There's always room for improvement and learning. I will be posting some new sketch techniques on Instagram throughout the rest of the month and into the new year. If you don't follow me, there's a link at the bottom. You can watch my progress, chime in on you're favorite techniques even feel free to give me some feedback on my style. I would love to hear everyone's thoughts and ideas.

Another fun thing I've got going on on Instagram is my Christmas Movie Advent.  25 days of Christmas inspired movies to keep you in good holiday spirit throughout the month. Here's a little preview. Print outs of the movie posters are kept inside the envelopes as show below.

Week of November 9th, 2015 | This R2 Unit Has a Bad Motivator + Get to Giving

Sometimes, one week isn't long enough to create and finish all the things you would like.  It seems like you completely lose track of time when you're having fun, or when you're tying to nail down a new design, over analyzing...trying to make it perfect and it still doesn't resemble anything that you could be proud of.  I really let this R2 unit down.  So that leaves me with the task of starting over from scratch on this new design, and you'll have to wait until early next week to get your hands on it.  But here's a little sneak peak into what's in the works. Think cold weather, sweaters, and your favorite droids.

Jlane Design Christmas Holiday Gift Guide

I've also been working on a new feature for the website this week.  A little something to get everyone in the giving mood for the holidays.  I'll be launching this new feature in next Friday's "In the Studio" post.  Here's a little piece, to get a taste.

Speaking of getting into the giving mood, make sure you stop by my Teepublic shop today. There was a short sale this week that's ending in a few hours, so it's a good time to get your hands on some of my work for a great deal. Also check out my shop that includes not only my designs, but some of the other talented people on Teepublic and their designs. All Star Wars themed, of course.

I do understand this week's post is a little short, but I promise you it only means bigger and better things to come next week. Like I said, sometimes one week just isn't enough time to create and finish all the fun stuff you wish to.  Spend time to make it great, it's worth it.

Week of November 2nd, 2015 | Damn It Leeroy, Stormtroopers + Ugly Sweater Season

"Damn It Leeroy! Stick to the plan!"  In honor of the new World of Warcraft trailer being released today, I planned on paying a little homage to the most popular RPG in the galaxy.

Stormtrooper Sketch Drawing Jlane Design

This week I worked on a fun mashup of the most popular internet character from the World of Warcraft, Mr. Leeroy Jenkins, and our beloved First Order Stormtroopers from The Force Awakens. If you've gotten this far and have no idea what I'm talking about, please just check this out...it's funny...every time, even if you're not a gamer.

As usual every idea starts with a sketch for me and I'm lucky enough to have a friend from the dark side to provide me with some reference images for my stormtroopers.  Keep your friends close, keep the dark side closer.

Things change a lot through out the process, especially once the drawing gets into the computer.  I use Adobe Illustrator to get all my designs vectorized and looking beautiful for print.  It's basically like tracing over the drawing, but during that process I can manipulate the design more and easily make changes to it, if I change direction with the concept.

I have to say after working on each of these First Order Troopers individually, I'm all too familiar with the details of the armor now.  Which lead to me being a complete nerd and perfectionist when it came to finishing up this design.  Everything had to be as accurate as possible, while still keeping it simple.  When you're a perfectionist, it's really difficult to keep it simple due to ALL the detail you want to incorporate in each piece. However I made it happen and here's the final product.

Stormtrooper Jenkins is on sale right now on my Teepublic shop. Hurry, though, because it's only $14 for the next 72hrs. There's a lot of colors and styles you can choose from as well. My personal favorite is the baseball tee. 3/4 sleeve for the colder days ahead.

And speaking of colder days ahead, Ugly Sweaters are still in high fashion.  To be more exact, Ugly CHRISTMAS Sweaters.

I'll admit Christmas is my favorite holiday. I freakin' love Christmas. I wish it was longer. But I know some people out there are super Grinch's about the holiday. I get it. For some of these people the holiday's mean getting together with family, but not in the nice Norman Rockwell dream kind of way...I'm talking Griswold Family Vacation kind of way. I know everyone has a cousin Eddie in their family. So for all the people out there that have to go through that similar Christmas Vacation Misery, why not express how you really feel this holiday season.  This Ugly Christmas Sweater is available on my Teepublic shop in a variety of styles and colors. And if you're looking to express your holiday cheer in another fashion, head over to my Redbubble shop and grab this design for your Christmas Cards to send out this year. Let ALL the people know how you really feel.

Keep following along to see what I'm up to in the studio every week. Last week I mentioned that I went through all the fantastic Star Wars themed shirts on Teepublic and gathered them all into one shop.  Check out All the Forces in the Galaxy to see some of my designs as well as other amazing designs by a bunch of talented people who love Star Wars just as much as the rest of us.

Next week I'll be working on some things that will make awesome gifts this year for the nerdy, geeky and adorably dorky people on your list.

Week of October 26th, 2015 | All the Forces in the Galaxy + Dia de los Muertos

The week before Halloween and Dia de los Muertos is always an unproductive one. Everyone pulling together their last minute costumes and wondering which party or how many parties they should go to. Some of you are probably still deciding what you're going to dress up as.  Also Comikaze started today! I'll be there this weekend, wearing my very own "Dia de Princess" shirt in honor of Dia de los Muertos", my love for Star Wars and the great Carrie Fisher. Looks amazing on the vintage steel heather from Teepublic. Gives it this nice vintage soft feel and look. Love it!

So with all this horror and partying on the brain, it's hard to get much done.  I even decided to take a few days off to enjoy the world of sports. Sometimes it helps to just step away from my world and come back into it feeling refreshed, and possibly with some new ideas.

Don't worry though, I didn't step too far away.  While still enjoying the major sporting events that took place this week, I sat down and did a little recap on what's come out this month. There was at least a new design every week and it was non-stop work, including weekends, but it was all worth it.  I did a small series of Han Solo and Princess Leia, below you'll see how well this duo compliments each other.  "Here to Rescue You" and "Don't Rescue Me" are both available as more than just Tees, check out my Redbubble shop where you'll find stickers, iPhone cases and more.

I also came out with a new style of design I haven't really worked in before, with my Kylo Ren - Sword in the Stone inspired shirt. "Whoso Pulleth this Sword" was a lot fun to work on and definitely a style of design I'll be working on again with future shirts.  This design is available on shirts via my Teepublic shop.

All the shirts this month were a lot of fun to make and I love all the great feedback they received. So last I wanted to recap on my favorite and that's the "Control the Galaxy" Stormtrooper and First Order Stormtrooper mash up.  It's gotten a lot of love and support in the community, and I totally enjoyed seeing it worn on The Comlink a few weeks back, by one of their booth directors.

It's been fun this month and the closer it gets to The Force Awakens coming out (yes, I got my tickets for Dec. 17th...Whoo!) the more I'm inspired, not only by my love of Star Wars, but all the other talented tee-designers out there as well making it all happen. Don't forget to check out the collection I curated of all these talented people and their Star Wars inspired designs, here.

Stayed tuned for next week. November is here and that means lots Ugly Christmas Sweaters to work on for the holidays.

Week of October 19th, 2015 | The Han to My Leia + Shady Lane's Saturday Afternoon

Happy, happy Friday! I'll say right off that this past Monday, was very challenging for me to get any work done due to the newest trailer for The Force Awakens. However, I was still able to release a new shirt and get a lot of love for the new style I was talking about in last weeks In the Studio post.  The shirt released Monday was "Whoso Pulleth Out This Sword", available now on Teepublic. A little mash up of Kylo Ren (The Force Awakens) and one of my favorite Disney films, when I was a kid, Sword in the Stone.  It was a lot fun to work on and I'll be coming out with a few more T-Shirt design in this style, in the near future.

Let's discuss the very latest T-Shirt that I just release today. It is the Han to my Leia.  As much as Leia doesn't need rescuing, this rebel learns to get over himself and be apart of the greater good of the galaxy, and still wants to be a hero.  "Here to Rescue You" is something I dreamed up this week.  I believe it is the perfect compliment to "Don't Rescue Me" and gets a little honest with the fact that at the end of the day, little boys, just as much as little girls, still dream of being someone's hero.  Chivalry is not dead. It's 2015, it's just expressed differently. This new design is available on Teepublic for the next 72 hrs for only $14.

Last month I discussed in the Week of September 13th, In the Studio post, about one of my paintings, "Saturday Afternoon" being printed out at 8' x 16' for an install at a Bed and Breakfast.  Everything went so well and I'm so excited to show you all some of the installation photos below.  My wonderful friends at Astek Inc. did an amazing job of printing one of my pieces I created this past summer.  I was able to drop off my painting and have them scan it in on one of their nice large format scanners then they digitally printed, in one piece on a very durable 8ft wide outdoor banner material. After all that it was shipped and then the awesome folks at Shady Lane Bed and Breakfast had it framed and installed in their outdoor lounge area.

If you're interested in purchasing prints of my paintings, even this one, you can check out my Society6 shop and grab some. They are great quality prints, with lots of framing options and very affordable.  If you're looking to get something custom printed, like the people at Shady Lane Bed and Breakfast in Hugoton, KS, feel free to contact me directly.

Week of October 12th, 2015 | Whoso Pulleth, Kylo Ren + Just DO IT! (said in your best Shia LaBeouf)

This week has been challenging, scary and...fun. I did something that made me nervous, anxious, something that I doubted I could even start.  A great idea came along, and I loved it! I was so excited about it...I couldn't stop thinking about it.  A new Star Wars themed design! Of course how could I not be totally enthusiastic about creating this new piece of work.  I really wanted to make this design happen. However, when it came down to actually getting it started, I froze.  This design technique was totally out of my comfort zone, and I didn't think I was talented enough to execute this artwork as I saw it in my head.

This happens a lot more with creatives, than you think.  Fear. Doubt. That cowerdice voice in your head saying: "Stick to what you know, there's no use in trying something new...you won't be good at it."  Ugh...I say screw that voice. I've learned that how you perceive things in life will set the tone on how you live life.  Immediately I thought, ok this is going to be difficult and it may take me longer to accomplish than others, it may really suck...but my time is invested in doing something new and no matter what, I'm going to learn something along the way, whatever it may be.  I mean I might learn Taco Bell's Bean and Cheese Burritos really aren't that big of a deal as people make them out to be. I don't know.

Sword in the Stone Sketch Little Boy Drawing

So the little Shia LaBeouf I carry around inside my head said JUST DO IT! There really was nothing to lose, I only gained knowledge and for me, that's how I've learned just about everything in my field over the years. If I didn't know how to do it, I taught myself how to do it. I didn't go to college and I didn't have a mentor. I had this tiny piece of confident me, that whenever fear decided to make a cameo appearance, it said "why CAN'T you?" and fear never had a good enough answer. Don't get me wrong, fear never shuts up, that's why I just put on some really good music and tune it out.

Well I did it...still doing it actually.  I'm releasing this new design that was so challenging, on Monday!! Yay! Here's some progress shots, there's still a lot more to do today so I'll be working for the weekend, keep following to see the final piece next week.

BTW, I learned a lot so far and realized through the process that I really suck at drawing hands. So there's some tutorials in my future for that specifically...learn and grow, people...learn and grow!

One last thing, if you haven't heard, my last design Don't Rescue Me is now available on my Redbubble shop as stickers, totes, journals and more! So stop by and check them out.

I hope everyone has a great weekend! Feel free to leave a comment, questions...an emoji of a burrito, or if you just want to geek out with me you can contact me here. Keep following to see what I'm up to next week!

Week of October 5th, 2015 | Don't Rescue Me + Now Taking Requests

It's an outdated fairytale, the Princess waiting for her Knight in shinning armor to come and rescue her...save the day, then take her back to the castle where she can sit around and look pretty in all these gorgeous (REALLY uncomfortable) dresses, maybe make him a sandwich...a chicken pot pie, something delicious I'm sure...but really boring.  Repeat after me: The Princess doesn't need rescuing.  In fact more often now than ever, it's the Princess saving the world or galaxy.  Rescuing the Knight who really didn't think things through before rushing into battle and ended up bruising more than just his ego. This old idea that women, even little girls need a guy to come in and save the day, just doesn't hold up anymore.

I've always been very independent and been able to hold my own through a lot life's ups and downs, without ever feeling I needed to be rescued in anyway.  I can really attribute that to a lot of the female heroines I was exposed to growing up. Ripley (Alien), and Princess Leia just to start. I know Princess Leia got a little weak in the knees for Han Solo, but really...who wouldn't, scoundrel. However, remember she saved him when he was frozen in carbonite. It's amazing to see all the new bad a** female characters breaking into pop culture for this younger generation of girls and even at the same time reminding the older generation of women that they got this, they're still amazing...strong...and definitely don't need rescuing.

Now being inspired by all this feminist spirit, I created a new T-Shirt design this week.  It's called...can you guess?  "Don't Rescue Me" It's now available on my Teepublic shop for $14, but only for the next 72 hours. So if you're looking for something to express your amazing female power, stop by the shop this weekend and get one, before they go full price.

Here's a short video showing one of my favorite parts of the process, which is always the quick sketch to get the idea going.

In addition to working on this new design this week, I've also started taking requests from super amazing geeky people, for specially designed T-Shirts for their own personal nerdy needs.

I get the pleasure of helping out some friends, who are participating in the runDisney Star Wars Half Marathon - The Darkside 5k    The request was for matching T-Shirt designs to wear during the run, and channeling something in the vain of Darth Vader.  We'll see what I can come up with, it's going to be a lot of fun to work on.

I also received some awesome likes and love over my recent designs of the Stormtrooper mashup and the X-Wing Fighter Helmet mashup. Control the Galaxy and Old Rebel, New Resistance.  So much love, in fact, that these people would love to see the full helmets on their own with the corresponding logo's over them, as well. All I have to say is ask and you shall receive. So excited to start on some of these new designs next week, and keep in mind, holidays are nearing and all these fantastic geeky tees will be on sale and make for some really great gifts for the fanboy or fangirl in your world...I mean galaxy.

Keep following along and feel free to leave me a comment or contact me about any questions, ideas or if you just want to geek out with me about something.

Week of September 28th, 2015 | Old Rebel, New Resistance + Coming Through in Waves

Last week was lacking an "In the Studio" post and I have to apologize. It wasn't due to the fact that I didn't have any content I was working on...I did...and I was really excited to share it with you all. Unfortunately the week got away from me, with lots of work and an unexpected trip out of town. However, I'm going to share with you this week the one thing I was excited about and more.

The week of September 13th when I released my latest T-Shirt design, "Control the Galaxy", I also showed a sneak peak of a new design that was coming next.  "Old Rebel, New Resistance".  In the same vain of the last T-shirt design, I combined Luke Skywalker's X-Wing Helmet from the original Star Wars trilogy with Poe Dameron's X-Wing Helmet from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  This shirt is available for sale in a variety of styles and colors on Teepublic.  I hope you like it, and you know...holidays are coming up...it would make for a really cool present. Just sayin'

So in addition to working on getting that new design ready for sale, I was able to get back into the studio and do some painting.  A few weeks ago I had prepped some canvas pieces and I wanted to show you all how this one new piece is coming along.  Here's some progress shots of some of the detail that goes into my artwork and you can also get a sense of how things change throughout the process.  I just spent most of the day in the studio again today, although it was a rough day getting back into it after the quick trip I just had.  Sometimes you have these days or weeks where you're just on it, and then there's days where you can feel a little defeated and as though nothing is working or coming out the way you expect it to.  Today was one of those days and the best advise I can give, is to step away from the piece, often.  Take the time to examine it and see where you feel things might be going in the wrong direction.  You'll do this more than a few times, at least I did, but after a while you'll get it. Just have the guts to keep going and don't quit on it.

Week of September 13th, 2015 | Control The Galaxy + 8ft Paintings

Stormtrooper New and Old Sketch Jlane Design

This week has been off to a great start. I'm making big waves, literally.  My recent painting "Saturday Afternoon" is getting some big exposure, 8ft x 16ft to be exact.  This week I have the pleasure of getting this piece blown up and printed at that size for an outdoor wall mural at a Bed and Breakfast. Can't wait to get some final install shots to show you all.

Also, if you haven't seen it already, I released one of the new shirts I had posted about in last weeks In The Studio update.  Last week you saw some sneak peaks, so this week you get to see the finished design and I've posted some of my progress shots as well. I've also included a sneak peak below for the next design in this series, which will be available this Thursday on Teepublic.

It always starts with a quick sketch to really nail down the idea that I have in my head. Once I get that sketch into the computer, I need to make a fully vectorized file. This not only makes the design a digital file now, but also gives it superior quality for the printing process.  Blurry, distorted or pixelated does not make for a great T-Shirt design.  This also allows me to play with the sketch more in the computer to experiment with new ideas that might come up while creating the digital version.  This really is my favorite part.

So after all that and playing around for a while, seeing what works and what doesn't, the final piece is set, and then uploaded to Teepublic, where my friends and fans can geek out and get their own, originally designed by JLane Design, T-Shirt. Check it out! It's on sale for $14 until Thursday so make sure you get yours!

I'm also finishing up this week with the next design in this series. Here's a little progress shot for you to get an idea of what's ahead. This new design will be released on Thursday on Teepublic. Stay tuned as new designs only go on sale for $14 for 72 hours.

Keep following along to see what's going on in the studio next week!

Week of September 7th, 2015 | The Force Has Awakened + Creative Block Lifted

Hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend! Now back to making stuff.

Being creative 24/7 can be exhausting.  The forever dreaded creative block is real and can be debilitating.  You wake up one day, and it's gone. Every creative sense in your body has gone on permanent vacation and left you to stare blankly into space wondering "Who am I, and what the hell do I do now?" You feel unproductive, guilty, and scared.  You've lost it, and you'll never get it back, and good luck on trying to figure out what you're going to do with the rest of your life.

I have to admit, I felt this way for about two weeks now. It sucks. So a friend gave me some good advise this morning about how to get out of those ugly creative trenches.  Never try to push through a block. You'll end up putting out some hideous work, just to get work out there.  Instead, my friend suggested, a positive distraction. Find something that puts you in a happy mood. This can be anything, read a book, put on a funny movie, take a walk or get a massage. Anything to distract you from the thoughts, that you've lost your edge.  Well, this past three day weekend, was a wonderful distraction and so inspiring that I'm now working on a new series of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, graphics and art!

Stormtrooper Sneak Peak Graphic Design Jlane Design

Last night I started with some mock up ideas and here's a small sneak peak at what's to come.  Just enough for you to guess what's next in my geeky line of artwork. This series is going to be a lot of fun to work on.

While I'm working on these new pieces I'll also be working on some file set ups for a Gaming Truck Company coming to the Los Angeles area soon!

Keep following to see the progress on these new pieces, more information on last week's documentary getting finished and the launch of the Gaming Truck Company.
